A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
