Authorities stated they could not remove the eyes without harming the artwork.

A teenager from Australia has appeared in court after reportedly vandalizing a sizable blue sculpture of a legendary being by affixing plastic eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, appeared remotely at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in South Australia on that day, charged with one count of property damage.

In a statement at the moment of the recent event, the local council explained that CCTV footage captured a person placing fake eyes on the sculpture, which locals have dubbed the “Blue Blob”.

The accused made no plea and informed the court she was unwell, as reported by media sources, with the magistrate advising her to find a legal representative before her next court date in the final month of the year.

A day after the alleged incident, the city leader said that repairs to the much-loved public artwork would be expensive as the adhesive eyes could not be detached without harming the sculpture.

“This intentional vandalism to a cherished community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in mid-September. “It is not harmless fun, it is costly - it is also disappointing to those members of our society who have welcomed Cast in Blue.”

The mayor said the local government would pursue the “significant” restoration expenses from those responsible for the damage.

When the sculpture was first proposed, it drew mixed reactions from the local community due to its cost and design.

Priced at 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the sculpture depicts a mythical megafauna, with the sculpture’s designers inspired by an prehistoric anteater-like marsupial found in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.

Official name vs. local name
The sculpture is its official name but locals called the piece the ‘Blue Blob’.
