Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
