Explosions and Low-Altitude Aircraft Witnessed in Venezuelan Capital Caracas City

Accounts emerged of several blasts and the roar of low-flying aircraft in the Venezuelan capital in the early hours of Saturday morning. This situation has led to allegations from Venezuela's authorities and calls for international intervention.

Venezuela Accuses United States of Attack

Venezuela's authoritarian administration has blamed the United States of an act of "imperialist aggression," stating that ex- President Donald Trump reportedly ordered attacks against the Latin American nation. In an formal announcement, the government stated that strikes had targeted Caracas and several other regions: Miranda state, La Guaira, and Aragua.

"The primary goal of this aggression is to gain control of our nation's strategic resources, in particular its oil and resources," Venezuela declared.

The government urged the world to censure the strikes, which it labeled a "flagrant violation of international norms" that endangered countless of lives at risk in jeopardy.

Reports of Blasts and Defense Sites Targeted

Residents spoke of experiencing approximately seven explosions around 2:00 AM local time. Citizens in several neighborhoods allegedly ran into the streets outside.

"The whole ground shook. This is horrible. We experienced blasts and planes in the distance," commented one witness.

Black smoke was reported pouring from two military installations in the city: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna compound, where leader Nicolás Maduro is believed to live.

International Condemnation

The leader of neighboring Colombia, claimed on a social platform that "Currently they are bombing Caracas... bombing it with projectiles." He demanded an swift emergency session of the UN Security Council.

Colombia, which just became a member of the Security Council, stated it would initiate security measures at its shared border with Venezuela.

Background

The reported strikes are preceded by a prolonged military buildup by the US against the Venezuelan administration. Beginning in last summer, there has been a substantial naval deployment off Venezuela's northern coast and a number of airstrikes on vessels suspected of drug trafficking.

The administration has stated "a state of emergency" and commanded all national defense protocols to be implemented. It has also called on its supporters to protest and "reject this imperialist attack."

American officials and the Pentagon did not immediately addressed requests for a statement regarding the reports.
