NY Introduces Reporting Tool for Citizens to Share ICE Videos Following Arrests of Four US Citizens

New York state AG has rolled out a fresh digital platform urging citizens to provide images and footage of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This action follows a day after a major ICE raid shook Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking mass protests.

American Citizens Arrested In ICE Operation

A lawmaker announced during a Wednesday press conference that four citizens were arrested and kept for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Protests occurred in NYC on consecutive evenings.

"All New York residents is entitled to live without fear," the AG stated in a release.

"For those who saw and recorded federal operations recently, I urge you to provide that footage with the authorities. We are committed to examining these reports and investigating any violations of law."

Form Details

The portal provides options to send photos and videos of the incident, plus a area to indicate where it occurred. Prior to sending, users must mark a checkbox that states that "the office may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, such as in a legal proceeding or government document."

Details of the ICE Action

The enforcement action, which witnesses say featured over fifty government officers, happened in a popular area of Manhattan where counterfeit purses, items, goods and other goods are sold daily in large quantities – frequently to sightseers.

Footage of the operation reveal multiple covered and weaponized officers securing and holding a person, and shoving away onlookers. Throngs of New Yorkers pursued the agents through the streets. An armored military vehicle was noticed traveling down the urban roads.

Political Response

In a Wednesday press conference featuring the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be arrested for unjustly." He noted the citizens were freed on the following day with no legal action taken.

"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman said. "This constitutes a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is merely a justification to provoke conflict for this administration to bring in the armed forces to halt unrest that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Outrage over the immigration operation rapidly grew – every NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the operation, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Repeatedly, the current administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that create fear, instead of protection. It must stop," one mayoral candidate declared.

New York City immigrant rights groups voiced concern as well.

"ICE targeted Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, covered personnel and riot gear to focus on small merchants trying to make a living. This operation had no connection to public safety and was entirely about intimidating residents and areas," stated the head of a major immigrant coalition.

ICE Policies

ICE policy bans the detention of US citizens and the bureau has said it will not apprehend citizens. Yet, independent reporting has found that over 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities since the start of the current administration.

Ongoing Trend

Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in NY and around the country lately.

A mid-October raid in central NYC was the initial documented operation on an housing center of the present government. Protests targeting immigration enforcement are commonplace as are accusations of aggression and inhumane treatment.

Latest, a submission provided by legal entities alleged medical neglect of expectant mothers in detention centers.
