This Limited-Edition Pokémon Card Seeks to Be Super Effective Against Resellers

Marking the arrival of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration has been formed. The Pokémon Company alongside London's Natural History Museum will launch a pop-up shop stocked with special merchandise. Fans can look forward to products like stationery, plushes, and artwork all drawing from the museum's theme. The big draw, however, will be a specially made Pikachu card, offered as a free bonus for the pop-up. The store is scheduled from the physical location to its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.

Pokécology Behind the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a much-awaited tome filled with beautiful illustrations depicting Pokémon in their wild environments. The concept is what an in-world scientist might publish once adventurers provide field notes, or a naturalist's journal might have created if the famous islands teemed with Pidgeys rather than birds. Part of the charm stems from the book's serious approach, treating Pokémon as a legitimate scientific inquiry. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and artist Chihiro Kinoshita each possess doctorate degrees in animal behavior and ecology.

Why This Special Card Stand Out

It is common for The Pokémon Company special edition cards celebrating big events or crossover partnerships. Many such promotional cards typically highlight the iconic mouse Pokémon who serves as the franchise mascot. What distinguishes this new promotion apart however, is the distinctly bigger dimensions. While exact measurements were not publicly disclosed, availability is guaranteed to be strictly limited, and fans limited to only a single card per purchase.

Limiting Speculator Activity

Per an official announcement, some of the merchandise may also be available beyond the institution itself. But, broader availability will only be specific stores in the United Kingdom. Critically, collectors will not be able to purchase the card via the online Pokémon Center. Although speculator demand is a given, it appears they will have a difficult time stockpiling large numbers on this occasion. For those feeling left out, consider the upcoming Pokémon Fossil exhibit headed to the Windy City in the coming months.

"Every penny from purchases from the Museum shop and its web shop, which covers these items, go toward the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the research of hundreds of researchers who are scientific inquiry to discover solutions to the global ecological crisis," it says.
