New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying such drugs should be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
